A Sustainable November against fast fashion costs

For some years now, November has become for shopping a synonymous for Black Friday: a tradition born in the United States to indicate the day after Thanksgiving and exported over time to the rest of the world. During Black Friday, but more and more often even for the entire week and beyond, physical and online stores offer important discounts and officially opens a shopping race that will continue until Christmas.

Textile field is no exception and most of the brands plan well ahead their promotions for Black Friday, riding a wave that does nothing but stimulate the general trends of fast fashion: people buy cheap clothing without considering the low quality and shorter life of these products, ready to replace them quickly with the next discount code.

The costs of fast fashion industry

But how much does this disposable fashion industry really cost? Every year 80 billion new garments are produced in the world, but 85% of them are discarded within the year following the purchase with a very high impact on society and enviroment. According to a research published in Nature Reviews Earth & Enviroment in 2020, the fashion industry is responsible for almost 10% of global CO2 emissions and for the accumulation in the oceans of over a third of microplastics that are present in them. Discarded or unsold garments produce more than 92,000 tonnes of waste per year.

Why a Sustainable November

That’s why Nicki Colombo does not celebrate Black Friday and fast fashion, concepts that do not fit with the values of craftsmanship and sustainability that we have always supported.
